Mahinga Kai

19.03.2020

Hello readers to day I have been learning about Mahinga Kai and it is something of what the Maori do in their life time. It  is job to keep the food for the winter because if they don't have  food for the winter they would've died. So the book that I read was book about Karl Russell keeping his food and sources ready for the winter. First of all he was talking about him self a little . Mahinga Kai is something about keeping the food and storing it under ground like put the food in a cold place and putting the seed under ground or persevering the meat and leaving it for days and the eat it. He says that Mahinga Kai meaning is Elements of the settlement offer which particularly related to Ngai Tahu interests were: Nohoanga  Customary Fisheries Management. Mahinga Kai is something to look after, protect it and pass it on. The people that learned Mahinga  Kai will show other people how to do their job like collecting the food and restoring it in a nice cold place or like getting seeds and planting them under the ground and waiting until they grow and how to get the sea food out of the sea.

Te Tiriti O Waitangi

In New Zealand the Maori people had a population of 100,000 people and then a few years later the population went down to 70,000 people and because of the diseases and war and fighting. Their was something that needed to be settled in called Russell , Kororakoko. The reason why they needed a settlement  because that town was a drinking , party , unfair trading and prostitution. The reason why Te Tiriti O Waitangi was neglected because of the rats + water damage and fire. Their was something set up and it was the United Tribes of NZ. The British saw France as a treat but the French tried to set up a French colony.Their were company plans that were set up Edward Gibbion wakefield and his friends and the reason why they did this plan because so they can buy cheap land and sell it to the rich Maori. The reason why the British people send Hobson to set up the Waitangi because To have more orderly type of colonisation , to make everything fair. When they went take the treaty for them to sign only 500 people signed but some of them complained about it  that they want their land to be theirs and their was one problem that the Maoris  thought was the missonaires another. The meaning of Tino Rangatiratanga is having your own authority.Sovereignty is the crown has- make your own decisions. Kawanatanga is a made up word for meaning sovereignty and using a English word together with a Maori word.
